Limited mouth opening

Limited mouth opening after dental surgery

Opening the mouth may be difficult after removal of a lower wisdom tooth or another surgical procedure near the jaw. This is usually caused by swelling and temporary stiffness of the chewing muscles. Moderate limitation is common during the first few days and generally improves as swelling subsides.

What can you do?

Do not force your mouth open. Choose soft foods and follow your dentist’s instructions for pain relief. If your dentist allows it, begin gentle opening and closing exercises after a few days.

When should you contact the clinic?

Contact the clinic if opening becomes more difficult, does not improve within about a week, or is accompanied by fever, increasing swelling, pus or severe pain. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing.
