Bruising may appear on the skin around the jaw and cheek after a tooth extraction or oral surgery. Its colour may change from dark purple to green or yellow as it heals. This is usually normal and generally fades within one to two weeks.
What can you do?
During the first day, place a cold pack wrapped in a cloth against the cheek for 15 minutes at a time, with 15-minute breaks. Do not place ice directly on the skin or massage the tender area.
When should you contact the clinic?
Contact the clinic if the bruising expands rapidly, becomes very painful or hot, swelling worsens, or you develop a fever. Seek urgent help if breathing or swallowing becomes difficult.
Important: always follow your dentist’s individual instructions.
