The first signs of gum disease are bad breath, bleeding gums and capped teeth, which can lead to tooth mobility. This is most often due to poor oral hygiene, smoking and genetic predisposition.

Tartar (hardened microbial coating) on the tooth surface and in the gum pocket causes gingivitis. Tartar is removed by an oral hygienist or dentist using special instruments. The oral hygienist will teach you how to look after your teeth properly and give you advice on how to use oral care products.

Prophylaxis, twice-yearly visits to the hygienist and home oral care are the basis for good oral health.
