Prosthetics
Prosthodontics is the part of dentistry that involves replacing tooth tissue or teeth that have been lost due to decay, trauma or gum disease.
Missing teeth interfere with normal eating and lead to low self-esteem. Teeth can and should be replaced. Dentures can be divided into 3 groups – removable, non-removable and combined dentures.
Removable dentures are those that the patient can take out of the mouth for cleaning. These are partial dentures (the teeth are still in place), total dentures (the teeth in the jaw are no longer in place), removable dentures (a metal arch instead of a plastic base) and combined dentures (a removable denture is combined with a non-removable denture).
Patients are often scared of dentures coming out of their mouths and leave them in place under false pretences. Yes, dentures that come out of the mouth are initially unaccustomed and even uncomfortable, but the mouth quickly becomes accustomed to the foreign body and the aesthetic improvement in appearance often improves self-esteem.
