What to eat after tooth extraction

After a tooth extraction or oral surgery, the wound needs to heal without disturbance. Do not eat while the anaesthetic is still active, as you may bite your cheek, lip or tongue. On the day of the procedure, avoid vigorous rinsing, drinking through a straw and smoking, because suction may dislodge the blood clot.

What should you eat and drink?

During the first few days, choose soft, cool or lukewarm foods such as yoghurt, purée, porridge or lukewarm soup. Chew on the opposite side when possible and drink enough water.

What should you avoid?

  • Very hot, hard, sharp or spicy foods.
  • Seeds, nuts and small particles that may enter the wound.
  • Alcohol and smoking while the wound heals.

Return gradually to your normal diet according to how you feel and your dentist’s instructions. Contact the clinic if eating or swallowing becomes increasingly difficult.
