Mild bleeding and blood-stained saliva are common during the first 24 hours after a tooth extraction or oral surgery. The blood clot protects the wound and is essential for healing.
How can you stop bleeding?
- Place clean gauze directly over the wound.
- Bite down with steady, firm pressure for 30–60 minutes.
- Sit quietly, keep your head elevated and do not check the wound every few minutes.
Do not rinse vigorously, spit, use a straw, smoke or perform strenuous activity. These actions may dislodge the clot.
When should you contact the clinic?
Contact the clinic if bright-red bleeding does not stop after repeated firm pressure, blood rapidly fills the mouth, or you feel increasingly unwell. Seek urgent help for very heavy bleeding, weakness or difficulty breathing.
